ERS: European Respiratory SocietySpecial activities in 2010, the Year of the Lung
Founded in 1990, The European Respiratory Society (ERS) is a not-for-profit, international medical organisation with over 10,000 members – scientists, doctors and allied health professionals, coming from over 100 countries. The Society’s mission is to advance respiratory medicine by stimulating and coordinating the actions of its members, in order to achieve the highest possible medical, paramedical and social standards in the treatment of respiratory disease.
The CongressThe ERS Congress is the World's largest annual scientific gathering in respiratory medicine with over 19,000 delegates. This event provides a platform for important improvements in the understanding and treatment of lung diseases. 2010 Congress will be in Barcelona, Spain, 18-22 September.
The 11 Scientific Assemblies are created to facilitate exchange of information and knowledge among members working in similar areas. The Society also organises the Lung Science Conference, which focuses on basic science. The 2010 conference will be in Estoril, Portugal, on Biology of gene-environment interactions in the lung.
The ERS School aims at maintaining a high level of postgraduate education in the field of lung health throughout Europe. The educational website www.ers-education.org offers the largest collection of presentations, webcasts, slides and educational material in the field of respiratory medicine.
The European Respiratory Journal is the Society’s flagship publication, including original peer-reviewed papers, editorials, and topical reviews. ERS publications also include a series of clinical monographs (European Respiratory Monograph) and the European Respiratory Review. The Society’s educational journal Breathe – Continuing Medical Education for Respiratory Professionals aims to keep allied health professionals, respiratory physicians and respiratory paediatricians working mainly in the clinical field up to date on the different areas of respiratory medicine.
The European Lung Foundation (ELF) is the public voice or the ERS and aims at providing accurate and unbiased information for patients www.european-lung-foundation.org. The ELF exists to help current and future generations of European citizens to breathe more easily.
